The Route to become a driving Instructor

Becoming a driving instructor is no easy course.  But with hard work and commitment you can achieve it and the rewards it brings.

Below you will find a basic breakdown of what you need to do but for more extensive information you should look at the DSA website on being a potential driving instructor

There is now a requirement for all potential instructors to have an enhanced Criminal Records Check completed.  You then need to complete the application pack which you can find at the DSA Website.

You need a full UK or European Union (EU/European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence for a total of at least four out of the past six years.  Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years.  Pass the two qualifying practical examinations within two years of passing the theory examination.

There are 3 exams that you need to take to become a driving instructor are:

Part 1

This is an enhanced Theory test.  You make take this exam as many times as you need to do so to pass it.

Part 2

Enhanced driving test.  You may only take 3 attempts to pass this exam.

Once you have passed this exam, you may start your instructional ability training.  Once you have completed this training you may apply for a training licence which will allow you to teach real pupils to enhance your skills.  you may normally only have this licence for a maximum of 6 months.  Its here that you can think of a franchise agreement.

Part 3

Once you are ready you need to take the hardest of all the exams, the ability to teach. This is a role play exam where you need to teach a Senior Driving Examiner in an hour long test.  It consists of two half hour sections.  Again, you may only take this exam 3 times.

Once you have passed these 3 exams, you are able to apply to be added to the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.
